• The USA blooding in talent ahead of World Cup

    The USA is on course on building and blooding talent into their squad ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while many South Africans remain divided about the benefits of their national team’s camps since only local-based players are able to take part.

    The USA fell 1-3 to fellow 2010 finalists Honduras in a friendly encounter without many of their key members doing duty in the European leagues. But the US’s head coach Bob Bradley was positive about the outcome nevertheless.

    Speaking on ESPN’s First Take Bradley said: “It’s an opportunity to assess players, the whole camp is demanding.

    “I think there was definitely some nerves on Saturday night as guys know that this is a big opportunity for them.”

  • Benni McCarthy on his way to West Ham United

    Benni McCarthy has edged closer to a move from Blackburn Rovers to West Ham United, but the forward may not play when the teams meet at Upton Park on Saturday.

    Blackburn want £2.5 million for the forward, more than twice what West Ham are willing to offer as an initial sum, but they are unhappy that McCarthy has missed training this week.

    “We will deal with it separately should he remain here after the transfer window has closed,” Sam Allardyce, the manager, said.

  • Patrick Kluivert set for Brisbane Roar role

    Dutch great Patrick Kluivert has joined Brisbane Roar (formerly Queensland Roar) where he will be taking up a two-week coaching role.

    Having recently secured his UEFA “A” coaching license, Kluivert will bring all his top-flight experience and impart some knowledge to the ambitious side.

    The former Ajax Amsterdam striker will be working with head coach Ange Postecoglou where he will be working with the club's strikers as well as assist the coaching staff to help develop the club's young talent.

    Postecoglou told the club's official website that the Dutchman’s visit will have both short-term and long-term benefits for the club.

    Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko Modise says he is raring to go if selected for tomorrow's training match against Swaziland at Chatsworth Stadium (Kick-off 4pm).

    Calls have been to rest Modise, as he has been playing way too much football in the past two years for club and country. It will be interesting what the call will be from the technical team, as the man seems jaded and is experiencing a dip in form.

    He said the players are going all out with only a win in their minds for both games, including the friendly international match against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday night (kick-off at 8.30pm).

    Speaking at SAFA House in Johannesburg today, where he met with the Chief Executive Officer of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee South Africa (OC) Dr Danny Jordaan, SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani and CEO Leslie Sedibe, as well as senior OC management, Maradona said he was happy with preparations for the FIFA World Cup.
