The Algerian national team bus was attacked in Cairo, Egypt a day before the crucial 2010 FIFA World Cup encounter between the two countries on Saturday.

Algeria currently lead the race for a spot in next year’s event to be hosted by South Africa on 13 points.

Meanwhile the reigning African champions Egypt trail by three points and only a 3-0 scoreline will see them through.

The Algerian government says four players on the national football team have been injured after their bus was attacked by Egyptians in the country’s capital.

The windows of the bus were smashed with stones and rocks as the team made it’s way from the airport.

Emotions are running high ahead of this match, history tells of a fierce rivalry between these two sides as they prepare to meet for the first time in Egypt since 1989, when that match where Egypt won 1-0 ended in rioting.

None of the teams have qualified for the world cup since. Algeria were the first African team to record a win in the big stage in 1982 and their last appearance was in 1986.

While Egypt last took part in 1990, but were the first African country ever to take part in 1934. And their chances have been made that much slimmer after this incident.
