BAFANA BAFANA: "Every player will have to fight for 2010 place" - Parreira
"The purpose of this camp – consisting of only South African-based Players, is part of a plan to make sure that we are always ready," said Parreira. "We cannot always rely on foreign-based players, because over there anything can happen.
"You may find that when the time comes to make final selection of Players for the World Cup, they either lack match practice or are injured or overweight and so on. So, we must carry on seriously through these type of camps to prepare with the locally-based players and the overseas-based players will fit in."
"We have had several training sessions since we arrived in Durban and we are happy with what we see. However, it is only through games that one is able to see what these training sessions have really achieved.
"There are young players that we are giving a chance and we don't know whether they will make it or not, but it is important that we see them and give them the opportunity. The two games that we are going to play against Swaziland and Zimbabwe, are therefore just very important to us. We are going to intensify our program with several high profile camps including the one in Brazil in March still in the pipeline," continued the Bafana mentor.
Some of the players who were not selected for this camp had expressed their displeasure about "being overlooked" by the coach but Parreira explained that the door had not been closed as there will be other opportunities.
Bafana will play two matches in Durban, a training match against Swaziland at the Chatsworth Stadium followed by an official friendly against Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium - a 2010 venue.
