BAFANA BAFANA: Parreira to blood in new recruits

New Bafana Bafana recruits will get a chance to stake their claim ahead of the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

Bafana head coach Carlos Alberto Parreira announced a squad without key players on Thursday, ahead of the side’s international friendly against Namibia on Wednesday.

The return of veteran defender Bradley Carnell will probably raise eyebrows, while Bevan Fransman and Bryce Moon also return for another opportunity to impress as the clock winds down.

The Bafana squad of 22 is:

Goalkeepers: Emile Baron (SuperSport United), Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs).

PSL DC Update: Stoichkov charged for misconduct

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Hristo Stoichkov will appear before a Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee (PSL DC) hearing on Monday.

Stoichkov has been charged with misconduct relating to abusive and insulting language hurled at the match commissioner following the Absa Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows on 19 February 2010 at Super Stadium.

Stoichkov also slid his finger across his throat in a manner that suggested that he would want to slit the match commissioner’s throat.

Jali: 'Nothing else matters but victory'

The battle lines have been drawn and the Buccaneers are waiting in anticipation for tomorrow’s clash against fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs in Orlando, Soweto.

Kick-off is at 15h30.

Pirates may have lost midweek, but the boys are quietly confident they can pull of a positive result against Amakhosi; so says midfielder Andile Jali, who is hoping to play a crucial role in the game.

Said Jali: “We are very disappointed with our defeat at the hands of Maritzburg United on Wednesday, but it’s not the end of the world. We fought very hard to win the match, most particularly in the second half, but it wasn’t to be.

PSL and Sundowns at loggerheads

Mamelodi Sundowns are protesting the terms of their rescheduled match with Moroka Swallows set to take place at the Super Stadium tonight (kick-off 7.30pm).

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Fixtures Committee had concluded - from the match reports - that the match continues from the minute it was stopped.

The League has since received a letter of protest from Sundowns who trailed their opponents by two goals (0-2).

PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem confirmed that matter has been referred to SAFA arbitration and will be heard today.

“I cannot make any further comments on this matter until the arbitration hearing is complete,” was all Siem could say at the time.

Abandoned PSL matches rescheduled

Following a lengthy meeting on Thursday, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Fixtures Committee finalised plans to reschedule the two Absa Premiership matches that were abandoned on Wednesday night.

The match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows will continue from where it was left off and will now be played on Friday, 19 February 2010, at 19h30 at Super Stadium.

“We went by the reports of the match referee and match commissioner who both said that the match was abandoned due to floodlight failure,” said PSL CEO, Kjetil Siem.

“The rules clearly state that if this is the case, the match must be continued within 48 hours of its abandonment or at the CEO’s discretion.”

Two Absa Premiership matches abandoned

Inclement weather forced two Absa Premiership matches to be abandoned on Wednesday night, a relief for Mamelodi Sundowns who are chasing log leaders SuperSport United for the title, while Kaizer Cheifs may have been frustrated as they badly need a result to reignite their ailing league run.

Chiefs were ahead 1-0 through striker Nkosinathi Nhleko against Mpumalanga Black Aces at Loftus Stadium, but match officials abandoned the game in the 31st minute.

With the match being played in driving rain and a heavy downpour just before kick-off, the pitch soon became waterlogged and the match officials deemed conditions dangerous for players.

Meanwhile on the other side of Pretoria at the Super Stadium, the encounter Mamelodi Sundowns between Moroka Swallows was had to also be called off after 37 minutes of play.

Zwane happy with his contribution

Veteran Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Arthur Zwane has oficially stopped playing and wil join up with the Amakhosi technical team until the end of the current season.

Zwane made 244 appearances for the Glamour Boys since making his debut against Bidvest Wits on 22 July 2000. He won many trophies at Chiefs, including the Mandela Cup (now CAF Confederations Cup) and the back-toback league titles in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons are the highlights.

"It has been an honour for me to don the gold and black jersey from day one," said Zwane. "I am grateful for the support I received from the management, the fans, and the former and current players including coaches.

OFFICIAL: Zwane calls it quits

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager, Bobby Motaung has officially confirmed veteran midfielder Arthur Zwane's retirement from the game after a glittering career with Amakhosi that started way back in 2000.

The man nicknamed '10111' by the Chiefs fans, joined Kaizer Chiefs from Tembisa Classic in a much-publicised moved after a tug-of-war with archrivals Orlando Pirates. In a official statement, Motaung thanked Zwane for the contribution he made as a player on the field.

"His discipline is second to none and he will now be working with the first team technical team and development until the end of the season," confirmed the Cheifs manager.
